Keeping Your Pets Safe

Posted in General Resources, Home and Garden, Pets and Animals by Resource Poster
Before bringing our new pet home, we need to look at interior pet safety in our homes and vehicles. We may get very excited to bring the new puppy, kitten, dog or cat home and we may not think about the safety of our new family pet in the interior of our house, yard and vehicle.
Potentials hazards to your pet’s safety include:
  • Electrical cords – make sure they are tucked away and out of reach of the teething pet
  • Fireplaces without screens, wood burning stoves and burning candles
  • Never leash an animal to a balcony or porch from which they could fall
  • Poisonous plants you may unknowingly have in your home. Easiest to eliminate real plants and use silk plants in the interior of your home to insure the safety of your pets
  • Ponds and swimming pools – most young cats and dogs can swim but not for long periods. Even the interior of your home includes threats to your pet’s safety; bathtubs or sinks are very dangerous for kittens and puppies.
  • No chocolate for your pets. In fact, it is simply best to only feed them food specifically made for them. Chocolate, coffee, tea, grapes, raisins are all toxic to them
  • Household chemicals, medicines and cleaning products should be safely put away in closed containers
  • Brittle toys or food bowls that your pet could chew and then ingest
  • Open unscreened windows
  • Tempting open kitchen garbage or trash containers

How to Start Out on the Right Paw with Your Kitten

Posted in General Resources, Home and Garden, Pets and Animals by Resource Poster

Who can resist the charms of a kitten? Even though we think of them as just a bundle of “fun”, they do require some special “kitten” care to make sure they grow up healthy and happy.

Milk – Kittens should not have cow’s milk. It can make them sick and give them diarrhea. If the kitten has been orphaned, you will need to obtain mother’s milk replacer at your local pet store.

Weaning – You will need to take care that your kitten in not weaned too early. Mothers usually start weaning their kittens at around 4 weeks. By 8 weeks, your kitten should be eating solid food and they no longer require milk for proper nutritional care.

For the complete list on what to do for your new kitty and other pet care information, please visit www.petsandpetals.com.

German Shepherd Dog Health Concerns

Posted in General Resources, Pets and Animals by Resource Poster

Dog Health

Degenerative Myelopathy
This condition is relatively common among GSDs. It can appear in a young dog, but generally appears from middle age. The degeneration occurs over time, beginning with hind limb weakness. Eventually other weakness can occur, including the lower portion of the esopheogus, which makes complete swallowing difficult and can lead to recurrent pneumonias. Although initial signs resemble hip dysplasia, in actuality, it is the degeneration of the spinal cord rather than hip joints.

Elbow Dysplasia
Elbow dysplasia is characterized by an onset of severe lameness at between 4 and 6 months of age. It almost always affects only one of the elbows but occasionally will affect both. There are three different types of elbow dysplasia: UAP (ununited anconeal process), FCP (fractured coronoid process), and OCD (osteochondrosis). OCD more resembles arthritis in the elbow that may or may not be brought on by trauma or looseness of ligamentation at the elbow. Final diagnosis can only be made by radiograph. OFA now certifies elbows as well as hips. (See OFA Information and Statistics)

Epilepsy
This may possibly be genetically transmitted. At the least, the tendency exists in a few lines. The disorder may not express itself until the dog is about three to four years old. There is no way of testing for the disease until the dog has a seizure. (cm)

Hip Dysplasia
The hip joint is not constructed properly, usually with a shallow acetabulum. Dysplastic dogs can vary from minor problems to severe dislocation of the hips. This condition is generally considered to be inherited. Breeding stock should be OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) certified (look for an OFA number) or given an “A” certificate if from Germany. (Canada OVC) Current statistics indicate that over 20% of x-rays
sent in for OFA certification fail. (See OFA Information and Statistics.)

Your Dog The Social Animal?

Posted in General Resources, Pets and Animals by Resource Poster

Your Dog The Social Animal Did you know that dogs love to socialize? Taking your dog to different places can be such a great adventure. When interacting with other dogs or people, your dog will develop the social skills needed to be a better pet.

These trips can stimulate them both mentally and physically. Of course it is best if your dog has had some sort of basic training. It is important for you to have control of your dog in these situations. Once your dog has had basic obedience training you can more easily allow them to socialize with other dogs.
You will have total control over them, thus avoiding any unpleasant mishaps. As you take your dog to more places, you will start to see an even better behaved dog. More socializing leads to a more manageable dog.
