A Web search engine is a search engine that was specifically designed to search the World Wide Web for information.  Information usually consists of images, web pages, or any other types of files incorporating some or other type of information.  Databases, open directories, and newsbooks are also mined for data by the different search engines.  It is important to understand that search engines operate algorithmically; it can also be a mixture of algorithmic and human input.  This is in stern contrast to Web directories, which are maintained only by human editors.
