Depression is a medical condition caused by chemical imbalances in the brain that make a person constantly feel negative, unmotivated, sad, and aloof. Depression can last for weeks, months, or even years. It can result from anxieties, traumatic events, or triggered by nothing. Depressive disorder can affect people of any age, including teens and small children.

Children and teens frequently suffer from depression, which leaves families with lots of questions such as: why does it happen, and what treatments are available? Fortunately, depression is treatable and some of the best depression therapies come in the form of Neuro-Linguistic Programming techniques.

In the past, it was thought that adolescents could not be depressed, but in reality, depression can affect people of all ages. Often, depression in young people is triggered by events such as a loss in the family, changing schools, a relationship breakup, illness, or abuse. In some people, depression has no external cause. Depression can be hereditary, meaning mothers and fathers suffering from depression are more likely to have kids who also suffer from depression.

There are several different forms of depressive disorder. Most adolescents with depression have a type of major depressive disorder. This depression obstructs the ability to enjoy life and engage in normal activities. Some adolescents may also have a milder type of depression called Dysthymia, which is a long-term type of depression with milder symptoms than major depression. A rarer but still common type of depressive disorder is manic-depressive disorder (bipolar disorder), which is characterized by sudden mood swings from extreme happiness to extreme sadness.

Depression can be a problem for adolescents because their symptoms are different from the symptoms adults often have, making it harder to diagnose and treat. Often, young people with depression will not seem sad or “depressed” as one would expect in adults. Constant irritability is usually one of the biggest signs of depression in children and teenagers. Depression symptoms may not be obvious, but may include constant sadness, difficulty sleeping, fatigue, and decreased interest in activities they used to love.

Children with depression may do poorly in school, have problems making friends, or have disciplinary problems. The effects are also pronounced for teens, who may experiment with alcohol and drugs to escape their depression. Depression is not the sufferer’s fault, but those with depression do have the power to get treatment and learn how to successfully cope with their condition.

Depression treatments can range from counseling and therapy, to the use of antidepressant medication. Group therapy can be helpful for teenagers and children by providing a safe place to share their experience with others. Online services such as depression forums can also provide information on depression and serve as a therapy group for the depressed.

Behavioral therapy can help teach people how to manage their depression. Trained therapists can help families understand what causes depression. Family therapy helps educate families on why their child has depression and what they can do to support their child.

In some cases, antidepressants or antipsychotic drugs are prescribed. This is only done under the supervision of a physician who will monitor the child’s health and mental state. Even though people with severe depression may need to take medications, these drugs can have many side effects, especially in sensitive and still-developing young people. For this reason, psychological therapy, understanding and support from families and professional therapists, and the use of treatments that help young people learn how to relieve their own depression are considered better for helping young people with depression.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) practices can be used to relieve anxiety, stress, and depression. They help people develop safe and constructive coping mechanisms for handling depression. It works for people of all ages because it is non-invasive, does not require the use of any drugs, and is a valuable form of self-help therapy.

One NLP technique used to relieve depression is the NLP Flash. This technique teaches your unconscious mind to use the feelings that create anxiety and depression as triggers for positive thoughts that create relaxation. It is a technique that even children and teens can use to help them manage their depression.

People who are diagnosed with depression can overcome it. Therapy can help depressed people of all ages live better. NLP techniques are wonderful for helping young people and their families cope with stress and depression. These treatments can diminish or even eliminate depression in anyone.
