Gum disease is beginning to emerge as a serious health problem, which can inflict damage elsewhere in the body. Gum disease that has persisted for a long time without treatment can contribute to diabetes, heart attacks, stroke, pregnancy complications and osteoporosis, Alzheimers and some types of cancers. It also increases the risk of people undergoing several types of surgery, including coronary bypass and cardiac valve replacement. Gum disease was not considered something that could have any impact. Even amongst dental professionals, there has been a tendency to overlook the diagnosis of gum disease and patients have seldom been informed that they have the disease. On the bright side, a recent study found out that treating severe gum disease could improve the function of blood vessel walls, improving heart health. Though it may be too soon in the evolution of this study to say with certainty that gum disease causes other illnesses directly, the evidence is compelling enough that it is beginning to unite dental and medical professionals.
