A project is defined as any assignment which has a fixed beginning and a definite end. In today’s society, most work is based on project methodology. It would thus be imperative that we develop an understanding of projects and management tools and methods used in order to meet the project requirements. Management, technology, etc, are just a small portion of Project Management training. Projects may involve all these areas, thus project management training must include training across the domains.

Let’s take the case of a software development project. A project is initiated only after proper justification is provided. For this to happen, there must be a genuine need for the outcome being desired to be project result. Project planning begins with understanding the requirements. The requirements in a software development project are set forth by the business analyst handling that client/relationship. The requirements need to be tested using cases. There is a variety of requirements analysis software available in the market. Once the requirements have been decided upon and documented properly, the next phase of project management begins.

Project management includes distributing tasks to various available resources. But resources increase the cost of the project as well. Any project includes, two- way communication, throughout its course. The feedback process is indispensable to project managers to get a grasp of the current status of the project, which directly or indirectly affects the project planning of the future. Project management training should also comprise of a hands-on training experience of the communication tools used in that particular project, this kind of training, surely reaps in huge benefits. However, communication training goes beyond the mail software training. One must not disparage the relevance of routine check-ups during the course of the project.

Projects also involve human capital. Resource allocation deals with allocation of resources capable of doing tasks in a logical manner in order that the project objectives are met. Training in project management must include sessions on human organizational behavior, costing and human resource management. Such training must also include sessions on quality, value engineering, and theory of constraints. These theories are not to be just read, but imbibed as a philosophy in every project. More recently,trainers have started using specially designed computer games, in order to illustrate the project management concepts.These games involve the learner and at the same time ,make him use exclusively ,the project management technologies and its concepts.Such game based training is desired to have a quantifiable effect to a certain extent,using course assessments.The training should not only cover the traditional project management techniques but also try to involve the user to perform functions,using the project management technologies himself.

Projects are the basis of most of the work and so project management training is of utmost importance. For example, in a software development project, planning for the project begins with understanding the requirements. Then project managers manage their resources often by a project management template. Feedback helps project managers to understand the current status of the project and future project management is affected by it. So training on communication tools is highly rewarding. Training in project management should also include human resource management. The training, which now uses specially designed games, should involve philosophies as well as actually performing tasks using these concepts.
