Traditional Rug Hooking is a craft that has been around for many years. It is believed to have begun in Yorkshire, England where the workers in weaving mills were allowed to collect thrums. Thrums were scraps of yarn about 23cm (9 inches) long and were useless to the mills. These thrums were used to make warm rugs for the floor or bed by pulling loops through a backing. There are still a few of these early hooked rugs surviving and on display. They date back to the late 1700s and early 1800s.
